The Research and Development Ideation Department is responsible for delivering High Value Innovation Ideas to the Cosma Body and Chassis Group of Magna International.
Responsible for hosting the discovery reviews, idea prioritization, idea scoping, project initiation and preliminary development towards the Proof of Main Benefit for future product or technology implementation.
The Senior Project Engineer will have the opportunity to present project findings to Cosma executives including the Global Director of R&D, the VP of Engineering, and the EVP of Operations to gain approval for future development funding.
Ensure projects are being led according to milestones, including, but not limited to, communication and representation, project timing, efficient use of available resources and escalation of technical project status as necessary.
Project planning according to Cosma Innovation Development Process (IDP), targeting solutions to key Company Problem Statements.
Prepare project Gate reviews according to Cosma IDP guidelines.
Conduct product benchmarking and research studies and analyze data to develop new designs or concepts for automotive components and systems.
Investigate and review new and potentially groundbreaking products or technologies to determine their applicability.
Interface and work collaboratively with external customers, universities, suppliers, and internal departments to work on High Priority Problem Statement solutions to close the identified industry gaps (in knowledge or capabilities preventing or limiting Cosma’s position as an industry leader).
Organize periodic brainstorming sessions to identify potential solutions to key problem statements.
Provide design direction for components, systems or processes that meet customer performance, cost, mass, quality and timeliness objectives to maximize customer value and vehicle function, including improved economy, operating safety, operational performance and sustainability aspects.
Provide design directions to the CAD Designers and assist them in altering or modifying the design to obtain specified functional and operational performance.
Communicate design concepts with CAE Engineers and evaluate structural analysis results.
Direct testing activities for components and equipment under designated conditions to ensure operational performance meets project specifications with proven reliability.
Provide ongoing support to both internal and external customers by completing progress reports and preparing presentations to discuss anticipated timing, scope of work, technological findings and design changes.
Review lessons learned during project execution and applied them to future projects.
Support failure mode effect analysis (FMEA), design for assembly (DFA) and manufacturing (DFM) and geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T) on components and systems.
Coordinate activities concerned with technical developments, scheduling and resolving engineering development issues.
Responsible for working within approved project budget.
